Start with the space where it will hang.
Measure the usable width and height, leaving room around the sign and anything nearby. Include features that affect the layout: a doorway, window trim, a narrow wall, or furniture underneath. Send width first, then height, in inches.
If you are deciding between sizes, cut a piece of paper or cardboard to each size and hold it in place. Look at it from the spot where people will normally see the sign. This helps you judge the footprint before you choose a design.
For a gift, you may not know the wall measurements. Say that in your request. A general description of the room or the person receiving it is a useful place to start.
Give the wording and artwork room.
